not real writing, just timely observations

The tamaracks began to change color overnight. I didn't notice any change in the stand behind the new house, but down the road I saw several stands that were turning a light lime green, starting at the bottom. Some aspens across the shrub swamp had turned golden yesterday; I thought this year the leaves would fall without turning any brilliant color.

The Hermit found nine eggs in the chicken house yesterday! We still haven't cleaned out the nest boxes, but I will personally do it if it means not having to buy eggs from the store. Plus with the number of hens we have, we could get a mini egg business going.

We're seeing huge flocks of dark eyed (slate colored) juncos everywhere. I hate to admit it, but I haven't taken the time to observe migrants; I'm sure I could see many more species if I just look. I'm still seeing kestrels; it seems like there are many more than there are over the summer, probably migrants. The Hermit saw a golden eagle yesterday; he said the guineas were squawking as they herded the chickens into the chicken house while it flew overhead.

i just found you via earth home garden. i've been reading a lot of blogs by people who want to live life more in tune with nature, grow their own food, etc. because this is my goal as well. i love the description of yourself as a "earth hermit" and if you dont mind, i will use that as well. :)

very cool about finding the eggs! hopefully soon you can hang a hand-painted sign at the end of your driveway that says "fresh eggs 4 sale." i've always wanted to be one of those people. think i'll start by buying my eggs from those people.

dharma bum- Too bad you're a bit far away, otherwise you could buy eggs from this one of "those people". :)
