Tonight I went out to the step to listen for woodcock. Fortunately I heard two distinct males peenting and twittering as they spiraled skyward. The winter storm apparently didn't affect them too badly. But then, another sound nearly drowned out the woodcock....frogs. Wood frogs. It is spring.
Also, turkey vultures and Eastern phoebes have made their appearance recently. And Wilson's snipe.

I love all the "firsts" of spring. The older I get, the more appreciative I am.
We heard the frogs tonight, too! The kids were outside with me, and we talked about why we hear them now even though it's in the low 30's outside.
Where do you see phoebes? I haven't seen any in forever. I wonder sometimes if I see them just don't recognize them.
Just this week I saw a couple of TVs flying around too, and heard a phoebe while walking the hound Wednesday evening. Ah, the sights and sounds of spring!
Glad to hear the frogs are doing their part to usher in spring up there!
Jan M- I find myself appreciating these things more and more each year.
Heidi- I heard a phoebe outside my bedroom window this morning! I think they are everywhere, you just have to hear them and see them with their flicking tails perched on a low tree branch. Actually, the phoebes have made a nest in my future bedroom for the past two years.
RuthieJ- The soundscape is amazing. Everything is so alive!
FC- Although it still got down to 20 degrees, the spring peepers were still doing their thing in the middle of the night.
Sigh, I miss frogs.
Clare- No frogs up in the Arctic Circle? I would miss them too.
Your rough legged hawks are just now leaving here. I saw a dark morph last week.
