thought for the day

We cannot control the winds, the calm or storm over the open sea. But we can build a boat, make a sail, learn how to use them working with the wind, set a course and navigate by stars. We can, and we must.

My dad has a favourite little poem. I wrote it out for him in calligraphy and photoreduced it to a card he carries in his wallet.

Ships sail east
and ships sail west
while the self-same breezes blow;
it's the set of the sails
and not the gales
that determines the way they go.

Like the winds of the sea
are the ways of fate
as we journey along through life;
it's the set of the soul
that determines the goal
and not the calm nor the strife.

I didn't know where it came from, but Google found it: "The Winds of Fate," slightly different in the original wording by Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
