things I learned today

1. The flowering shrubs that seem to be everywhere in the woods right now are serviceberry, otherwise known as saskatoon. The berries are edible if you can get enough of them before the birds do.

2. If a butternut squash keeps all winter in the cook shed, and you decide to make squash fries for dinner, when you cut the squash open many of the seeds will be sprouting inside the squash. I saved the seeds that hadn't sprouted (this is a good keeper!) and gently scooped the rest out and brought them out by the compost bin and threw a little dirt over them. It can't hurt to try.

3. The ovenbirds are definitely back.

Very edible! Especially if there's some good rain, they'll get big and sweet. Just one Albertan's opinion, of course. I'm partial to the seedy little things.

There's no denying the Ovenbirds.
