Well, we made it through the first week of school. I'm sure the kids are going to stay up late and sleep in; this 6:30 bus routine is hard on everyone. I know our school district covers a wide area, but there has got to be a better way than to have kids on the bus so long. I could drop them off at school at 8:00, on my way to work, but technically I'm supposed to be at work at 8:00, and I think my boss was starting to look down on me for showing up at 8:20 or later last year. Not that anything critical gets done in that first half hour...
Starflower is feeling much better now, after getting a penicillin shot for strep throat on Wednesday. She attended school on Thursday and Friday. I often think, just a hundred years ago a little infection like that could have led to lifelong complications, or worse. Now it's just an inconvenience.
I have so much I want to post about, everything from gardening to philosophy to music, all the stuff that's in my blog description up there, but I'm having a hard time finding the time these days. Bear with me, soon the long nights of darkness will be upon this land and I will have much more time for contemplation.

I'm glad to have the first week behind me too. Molly is just loving Armstrong- what a relief!! It's funny your mentioning the long nights. Art and I were talking about that tonight and I just commented on Larry of Brownstone Birding Blog that I have a stack of book that I'll tuck into as soon as winter comes.

That sounds gruelling. I don't think we ever had more than about 45 minutes riding the bus each way. Although there was that year at Saskairie when Mom drove us a couple of miles along a trail through the pastures to the neighbours' to catch the bus in the morning, and then on the way home we got to walk. We were little, too, Grades 1 and 2, I think. Great adventures. I'm sure we gave Mom a lot of worry with our erratic arrival times, but you know, puddles and snowbanks and garter snakes and so on can't be just passed by.
James is back in school this fall (his choice) and it seems to be going well so far. But it's just a five-minute walk up the street for him.
Maybe they should put some video displays on those long-haul school busses so kids who spend so much of their day on them can get a little more optional instruction if they want. Something generic like travel documentaries or light science or even fun math tricks. Seems like such a wasted opportunity. How expensive could a couple of video screens on a bus be after all?

At our school we can drop our kids off up to 35 minutes before school starts - if you really pushed it you could probably drop them off 45 minutes early and still get away with it. I wonder if you could drop them off a bit early and still get to work on time. It would definitely beat that bus ride! I was feeling sorry for my son and his 45 minute bus ride but I guess it is all relative!
Man-I used to get Strep Throat twice a year-It really hurts! I'm glad Starflower is doing better.
Lynne- Oops. I had forgotten Molly was going to Armstrong, while your son had his eyes on Cooper! Well, she's going where some of my best friends were, many years ago.
Arcolaura- walking along a trail through the pastures to get home is truly an adventure most of us have not lived! Well, my kids walk by a pasture on the other side of the road, then walk by the pond, the horses, the chickens...I guess we have it pretty good!
Pablo- I'm sure my kids would be open to some video, and you're right, it would be a good use of the bus time. Right now they make use of Nintendo DS and MP3 players, technology with which I am still only vaguely familiar.
And, thanks for the vote of confidence. It still amazes me to think somewhere out there, someone gets something out of this...
Elise- We're having a school board election soon, and the one person I know I'm voting for is the one who said in the newspaper Q&A article that bus rides longer that 1 hour should be eliminated. YES! Someone who understands! I could get away with dropping them off maybe at 7:55, and get to work by 8:10. What really ticks me off is they pushed back the start time of school from 8:00 last year, 20 minutes, to supposedly push back extremely early bus pickup times. Our time got extended by exactly two minutes. Buses arrive at school at roughly the same times as they did before. So what has changed?
Larry- I remember getting it once or twice, but Starflower never complained of a sore throat. Dang Streptococcus.

I'm missing blog days too. Between a slowing older computer and dialup, I've been bad about getting out and visiting other blogs.
