22

first fall fire

Predicted weather for last night: low of 31 degrees, scattered frost.

Temperature here this morning: 22 degrees F.

We knew it was coming. After all, whenever low temperatures below 40 are predicted, 99 percent of the time there will be frost here.

We covered up the tomatoes, but we'll see.

We turned our furnace on last night. I was dragging my feet, as I hate the smell of heating dust in the ducts (and fear a fire there!) but haven't got around to trying to clean them, and Garth resists getting the vac truck in to do them. But it was getting too chilly to sleep properly, or to do demanding finger tasks well.

We have had some touches of frost, and there's a hard frost in the forecast for Sunday morning. The kitchen is cluttered with boxes of produce, and I'm figuring Saturday will have to be a digging day, even though every day is a building day these days...

ARGGHH! I didn't cover my 'maters! I am afraid to go over and look. I love the cooler weather, but it is sad to see summer go.

There is an award for you over at my blog...come see!

arcolaura- I always hated that burning dust smell of the first lighting of the furnace when I was a kid. But, you gotta do those finger tasks!

Barefoot Gardener- it looks like covering didn't do very much, considering covers give you at the most five degrees of frost protection, and we had a ten degree frost here. Oh well, lots of tomatoes almost ripe, I'll be making salsa or something in the next week or two!

And, thanks. You are too kind! I really would like to meet you some day.

I'm blushing...

Meeting would be so cool...maybe sometime when we have time to spare? hehe...

Hey Deb - we too just recently had our first fire in the fireplace and the low was 26.5 here on Tuesday night. The Mrs. has taken to calling me “Grasshopper” because of the relatively untouched heap of cordwood in the backyard. Oh well, that's preferable to my previous Harry Potter inspired nickname of "The Dark Lord." I'm not sure what that means, and I have a sneaking suspicion that ignorance is bliss. Stay Warm!

BRRRR! I know! We lost many plants; it was at least in the 20's at our house, too. Sad; we didn't really believe it and didn't pick all the tomotoes. Ah, well... other things on our minds.

Re: the last post that mentioned dreams: have your before-bed eating habits changed? I know it's a clique, but for me, some things (especially sugar) always lead to wierd epic dreams. I don't eat much sugar because of it. I don't sleep as well when I'm dreaming my grumpy cat has become a grumpy black bear, etc...

Good luck!

BG- My grandma lives in Braham...perhaps some time when I go to visit her? and, I must have driven right by your apartment one day when we were sampling fish on the Rum River south of town.

Eric- I'm tempted to call my husband "grasshopper" too, due to his paying more attention to his decoy stash than to our woodpile. Sigh.

GTR- All our covering didn't help one bit; it was too cold. :( Oh well, I'm looking into plans for stone garden beds that might retain a little heat!

My bedtime eating habits have not changed much..in fact, I don't eat anything at all after dinner. I do have a couple of drinks...rum usually brings out the more vivid dreams for some reason.
