doctors...arrgh...

I just got off the phone with my now-ex doctor. I am convinced that unless you have an immediately life-threatening condition, he doesn't want to be bothered with you. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and all that. Grrr....

I only called to ask about the results of some recent tests. I hoped he might have been open-minded, maybe have been open to some of the research I've been doing, that suggested a test that turned out normal may not have been, and may suggest the reasons of me having a body temperature of 96 point something and gaining weight on an anorexic diet. Pahhh... It's all normal, he told me, and he doesn't want to consider anything else.

At one point in the phone conversation, he paused for about a minute or so, and I had to ask him if he was still there. "Yes, but I was finished with what I had to say." Arrogant SOB.

I've had it with doctors. I'm smart enough to know what I have, and what needs to be prescribed for it, why can't I find a doctor who will take me seriously? And, for that matter, why can't I find anyone, including a spouse of fifteen years, who will?

Dangerous territory, I know.

Hmmm, sounds like thyroid issues?

Yes, I know it's super frustrating. Some people will say: "Doctor knows best" but to that I say phooey. It's a proven fact that they get very little education about nutrition, etc, and HOW could anyone not take that into consideration? We are what we eat, right? But instead, I've had plenty of doctors give me the skeptical "Mmmm, hmmmm" when I tell them my theories about my own body.

There is one female doctor in Duluth who might listen- let me know if you want her name.

Gina- I'm having problems emailing you so I'll respond here. Yes, I'd love the name of that doctor, I'd even pay out of pocket for a visit if she is someone who will listen! Damn right I'm frustrated...

I'd like to hear more about your research - privately if you don't want to bore people here (koelmac at yahoo dawt ca). Thyroid problems run in my family, and lately there is this creeping problem - I keep creeping toward the large end of my wardrobe, and still the pants are creeping tighter. Yet I think I'm eating normally, and I think I'm exercising more than normally, and my latest tests are apparently normal. Hmmm.

The tablets are pretty little... mailable, if you know what I mean.

I feel for you. I have hypothyroidism, and I had to go to three different doctors before I got a correct dose. Luckily my numbers were just low enough to get me started. But, the endocrinologist I finally saw at the end said that most doctors have no idea how much to perscribe or why. (BTW, I only got to the endocrinologist because of potential fertility issues, not because anyone would listen to me about how I felt and whether the dosages seemed correct. That's what's so damn frustrating.)

Anyway, keep plugging away until you get to a doctor who will actually *listen* to you.
