We had a visitor to Hasty Brook who said we should get rid of alot of the aspen there. He said they were dirty, soft trees, not good for the land. (maybe I should ask Mojoman for advice on thinning trees) Sorry, I like them. I like their color when the leaves are down and I really love the motion of the round leaves in the wind. You're the second blog today to comment on the differing colors of the light this time of year.

Every added minute of evening light is such a gift. Why do we only appreciate it after a long dark winter?

Love that light on those trees. A month past solstice and on our way to equinox. Everyday is a little brighter.

Beautiful.... You are blessed with some "good medicine" there.

I've been looking at your blog for a few months. I've got to say that N. Minn. is a beautiful place. Full of color for those who can appreciate subtlety (and occasionally being hit in the face with it).

The picture is similar to the rural area where I live in central Wisconsin. Ain't life beautiful? Especially since noon on Tuesday.

You captured it perfectly! I love when the light is all slanty and gold like that, making everything look a little too pretty to be real. I just can't ever seem to catch it on camera.

Good job!

Nice glow.

That is, indeed, lovey light. How could anyone ever consider aspens—or any tree—only for their utilitarian purposes and fail to treasure them for their beauty?

Lynne- was the visitor a forester by any chance?

Most of the tax forfeit lands are predominantly aspen around here; the timber industry likes them because they can harvest every 30 years and they regenerate themselves. I would like to see more mixed hardwoods (especially oak and sugar maple) around here, but the aspens make for a lovely view.

Island Rider- It's amazing how every minute makes a difference.

Robin Andrea- wow, I hadn't thought it's already been a month since solstice! Groundhog Day is coming up soon...

Forest Wisdom- I get a good dose of this good medicine every day. I would be a much different person without it.

DennisP- Thanks for commenting; I'm glad you enjoy the blog. You really have to appreciate subtle colors around here in winter. And, life definitely has a new glow to it since Tuesday at noon!

Barefoot- I see it so often on my way to and from work this time of year. I rarely get the chance to catch it.

FC- Thanks. I think the sun emerging from clouds kind of helped it along.

Grizzled- I'm hoping the county does not decide to use those aspens for utilitarian purposes anytime soon. They are on tax forfeited land adjacent to ours.

I really need me some snowshoes to get across there and explore more!

Ed- Thanks. It's a great place to be, here, if you don't mind the cold. :)
