uh-oh

Watch out for Mr. Calvin the Saxophonist.

Really, he did pretty well for his first informal night with the instrument. The Hermit was telling me that now we're even for him bringing Maggie and Hopi into the house without my consent, but I don't know. Saxophones don't leap out of their cases at 4 AM and leave deposits on the floor. Saxophones don't sniff your butt whenever you come in the door. Saxophones kind of leave you alone, until you take them out of their case.

He could be the next Charlie Parker, Branford Marsalis, John Coltrane, or David Sanborn. You never know.

Way back when, in more enlightened days, all of the boys at my kids' middle school wanted to play saxophones in band. They had so many saxophonists that they had to steer some boys to other instruments. It got to the point where the only way you could get to play sax in the band was if you already owned one.

I was a big fan of David Sanborn back in the day. He looks like a natural!

I have to add- the visual of a butt-sniffing saxaphone cracked me up!

Pablo- I don't blame them. Saxophone is way cool. Funny how there are "boy" instruments and "girl" instruments too.

Lynne- I went through a "lite" jazz period when I was in college, and David Sanborn was my favorite. Also the band Spyro Gyra.

Arrghh, I tried to post last night, but was not allowed.

I bet as a side effect of all this musicology, he will have great math grades. My best academic team kids are the band members.
The sax has to be the coolest instrument.

Ugh, Spyro Gyra ...my art major dorm mate grew a goatee, took up pipe smoking, and played that all the time.
It was painful for a metal head like me.

I'm with Lynne. The visual is hilarious. Calvin looks great behind that horn. For years I could hear my neighbor's son learning to play the sax. It made our walls vibrate. I miss it.

FC- I agree, something about music...I don't know what, maybe the timing, maybe the intervals between musical notes, which is a manifestation of physical properties...anyway, music helps the brain grow. But then again, I could never conquer calculus.

I guess Spyro Gyra would be torture to a metal head. But bluegrass would have been even worse! :)

Cathy- Yeah, the new thing around here is whenever I catch the dogs misbehaving I say "Saxophones don't do that..."

I like to see Calvin so excited about something, especially a musical thing I can offer some help with. Flute and sax fingerings are very similar, and I did actually try playing sax for a brief time when I was in college. And the band director gives lessons in the summer, to get them started.
