Starflower update

Yup, it was broken. Not badly, which is why we didn't make a big deal and run to the ER, but after a couple days the parental "maybe something is wrong" instinct kicked in, so The Hermit brought her to the doctor today. Her young bones are still flexible enough that, while the radius and ulna didn't break outright, they did bend a bit. Enough to put her in a cast for 4 weeks.

A little history: Monday evening, she and Calvin were riding their bikes home from their friends' house 3/4 mile up the road. This is a road that sees very little traffic, so I have no qualms about letting them ride that far. There is a bit of a hill on the way back, and apparently Starflower lost control and wiped out. I was in the cook shed when she came in with skinned knees and swelling wrist. I fixed the knees, The Hermit and I looked at the wrist, decided there was no obvious fracture or immense pain, so we decided to wait and see. Parental medical triage is something they don't tell you about when you have kids, and you never quite master it.

I was really hoping nothing was broken, because this girl likes to swim, and the swimming season is just beginning around here. But there should be plenty of swimming left in mid June, when hopefully it comes off. Piano recital is definitely out, however.

She's taking it pretty well. She's had us sign it already, and she did some more decorating. But there's already the itching. Any ideas/hints?

In other news, Calvin informed me he's decided to play saxophone in band next year. The only decision left is tenor or alto. I'm all for whichever he chooses! Being a former band geek myself, I am happy he has an interest! Now to design a soundproof practice area...

Oh my gosh! Look at the resemblance to her mom. The cast is lovely, but I can't get over how the cutie looks like her mom. Isn't that something?
Accidents happen. I'm glad it's just minor and she'll soon be on the mend.

I'm with Cathy- your pictures side by side like that, she looks remarkably like you! She actually looks a little pleased with the cast. Sounds like they expect it to heal fast and well. You're right about the triage training guide- We didn't get a handout either! WQhen Molly broke her foot we found that one of those soft Rubbermaid spatulas worked well for scratching without irritating or breaking the skin.
Tell her the cast looks COOL!!

Starflower posting as Mom:

Thanks for comment Cathy.I really do
feel pretty good about my cast. I really gunna miss the water though.
Otherwise I'm pretty chill about it.
Well...Bye-Bye.Oh one more thing.....
remember if you child has something
like this just and they
tell them to chill.

Mom posting as Mom here: ;)

I did notice, as I looked at the newly published post, how her expression matched mine. Wow. If only blue eyes were dominant, that would be a little me! The Hermit says she even has my butt...

Saxophone - loud. Clarinet is not as loud, but perhaps worse for squawks. I recall being sent outside, and then to the next hill over...

But we've had a beginning clarinetist in this smallish house over the past year without much trauma. I suppose that's partly because he never seems to practise at home...

I'm hanging my head in shame, I said don't worry about the wrist!! Please don't sue me! Ha Ha! I've learned my lesson to be careful about advice, thank goodness you didn't listen to me!! The saxophone is loud but we had fun with it when my son learned to play it. He would tell us to go for a walk in the neighborhood and he would blow it like a fog horn and we had to report back to him how far away we could hear it!!

The resemblance between the two of you is delightful, especially your profile photo right next to the posting. Same tilt of the head, everything.

Sending thoughts about "knitting" to Starflower's arm.

Looks like you have great kids-interesting names too!

I fell off my bike and broke my wrist, but no one would believe it was broken for a few days. Boy, did my mother feel bad about that one (and she's a nurse!).

I never broke anything, until I cut that finger off ... does that count? So, I have little good advice about cast itching.

Parental triage of injuries is one of the toughest things we do. It's always loaded with a ton of potential guilt.

I lucked out with a nurse in the house, but even so, breaks like your Starflower's fooled us a few times.

What an impish cutie!!

arcolaura- I've always gone for the quieter instruments (flute, mandolin, guitar) although I had a brief fling with an alto sax in college.

elise- it's okay, I had kind of assumed myself that there would be much more pain involved in a break.

madcap- Thanks for the knitting thoughts!

Larry- Actually (well you probably figured it out with Mr. Attitude) the names are pseudonyms. My name is really Deb, but I try to protect the kids' privacy some.

pablo- That must have been the exact same type of break. Now I don't feel so bad, if even a nurse/mom can miss something like that!

FC- I've never broken anything either, except maybe the last joint of one finger while playing volleyball. That finger is still a little crooked.

I suppose the lesson learned here would be "When in doubt, check it out!"

I was wondering about that-starflower wouldn't be a bad name though-
I don't blame you-I don't even always say what's really on my mind because its open to the public

For itching: skinny crochet or knitting needles? Bamboo skewers? I know that would drive me crazy! Hope she recovers soon.

Larry- Yes, if I had it to do all over again I might actually name a girl Starflower. :)

rurality- Not much talk of itching lately, so all's well. I think she's caught up in the attention thing, of having everyone sign her cast.
