springtime in Minnesota

Last Monday we had a high temperature near 90 degrees.

Wednesday night we had frost, with a low of 24.

Yesterday (Saturday) the high was probably around 75, but it felt much hotter in the city where we went to visit my dad. He and The Hermit tried unsuccessfully to get his mini RV started. The kids were finding all kinds of treasures in the attic, stuff my dad was more than happy to get rid of, like an old Pong video game, various books, doll furniture, and a skateboard (uh-oh, more broken limb stories in the future?) Then a quick visit to Trader Joe's, and we were headed home with the air conditioning on in the van. The sky grew cloudier the further north we went. I had to stop at the grocery store in Sandstone for ice, and when I stepped out of the van an icy blast of northeast wind hit me. The thermometer at home read 32.

The high temperature today is supposed to be 55, with a strong northeast wind all day. I guess gardening will wait until next weekend.

Isn't it lovely? And I planned to plant my pots this morning. It's just too cold to think about right now.

Odd weather-Most of the time when I try to start my garden early the plants just sit there without growing for the first couple of weeks anyway-I'm waiting till next weekend too.

Brrrrr, I know! We're staying inside with the woodstove today: snow on the deck this morning! Yikes! It was 80 on Friday...

Sorry to hear about Starflower's wrist; I can't imagine all the mom-instincts needed to keep a handle on all those teeth and wrists and everything: sounds like you're doing a good job!

So does this mean summer is already over in Minnesota?

Sorry to be rude, Deb, and jump in on your comments here. But...

Pablo-
Hehehe, Usually we do get a little more than two weeks of summer up here in the Frozen North *smile*

barefoot gardener: "and I feel fine..." :)

Tracy- So you got the cold front in the cities too? We left Robbinsdale about 5:00, and it was so hot then! Definitely too cold to think about gardening.

Larry- There must be a reason why traditionally, gardens are started Memorial Day weekend in Minnesota.

gtr- Snow?! This is absolutely crazy. I made a beef vegetable soup for dinner; winter comfort food in May! And thanks. I've been asking around for good kid friendly, holistic dentists; who do you see?

pablo- I've had frost here every month but July. Anything is possible. But, as Barefoot Gardener says, our summers aren't THAT short!

Sounds like it was a good thing the Lake Superior trip was cancelled. Can you imagine being out on that lake in that wind and cold? I hope we can still get together to bird some time!

It was dry this spring, and now I've got all three rain barrels full in spite of using quite a bit of water for planting, and I set tomatoes out and now there are snow flurries in the forecast. Hmmm.

Lynne- I don't know when the wind hit, but I heard there was even snow in Duluth! We definitely need to get together and bird sometime. :)

arcolaura- I'm just hoping I can get the majority of the garden in this weekend! We should be beyond the threat of frost, but you never know...
