quiet waters

I took this photo on the way home from my Lake Superior birding adventure. I stopped at a little lake with a canoe-only public access and walked down the hill to shore. After a day of big waves and pounding surf, the stillness of this small water was soothing.

Much of my drive home was surrounded by a thick blanket of fog, but the closer I got to home, the lighter the sky appeared. Within ten miles of home the fog had lifted, skies were clear, and it was about ten degrees warmer than it had been at the beach.

Friday morning weather: 32 degrees and snow showers.

I love your picture of the fog on the still lake- very peaceful. Snow showers this morning? It's a good thing Art winterized the water lines in the caamper!

This is a great and moody photo! It's not 32 here yet, but it has dropped 50 degrees in 3 days. It might get under 40 tonight. I'm not quite acclimated to the temperature change yet!

I am really amazed at the response to this photo. I liked it, or I wouldn't have posted it, but I thought, well, it's okay but not special. I guess, by the comments, that it is indeed special. What I like is the shoreline leading out from the lower right corner, creating a line between earth colors and water and fog.

Lynne- It didn't last long, but it was a sign of what is to come! But, strange to think we had way colder nights in early September.

Carolyn H.- Weather has been crazy here too. The Saturday I went on the bird trip, my husband and kids headed west and slightly south, where the temperatures were in the 80's.

Denise- You're welcome. I'm glad I stopped there now.

Momadness- Little lakes like this one are so much a part of the landscape here. I lived in Missouri for a little while, and the lakes are what I missed the most.

Eric- Thanks. No, no ducks there, although did you read a couple posts back about the raft of diving ducks in Duluth Harbor? Amazing. I have opened my eyes to ducks more lately, and today I was taking a walk around our muskie rearing ponds, and came upon a small (8-10) flock of divers on one pond. I observed as much as I could, wishing my binoculars were more powerful, and when I got back to the office and consulted with my Sibley's bird guide, they were hooded mergansers.

Nifty G- Thanks, glad you like it! I knew there was a reason I stopped at that lake access, although I was eager to get home...

Madcap- I was feeling very pensive and fall-ish when I took that photo. Good observation.

Barefoot Gardener- Thank you.

I like it when it's foggy--all the other background noise (cars, trucks & planes) around my house are muffled and I find it very peaceful also.

Snow showers, eh? Well, hopefully we've still got a few nice days coming up and winter holds off till November sometime.

RuthieJ- Fog does kind of put some things in perspective.

I just noticed, looking again at the photo; there's this symmetry, yet it's broken by lines, lines of the shore and the fog. This might be one of my favorite photos yet, partly thanks to all the feedback I got here.

I like this photo. I can feel the calmness of it.

Remind me not to go out on any of the Great Lakes, though.

Pablo- Thanks. After a day of rough seas, it was nice to see this. We were in Duluth today shopping, and it was calm and sunny. Quite a difference from last week!

Beautiful shot Deb. I'm always on the lookout for canoe only lakes... would you mind emailing me the name? I think you should have my address but let me know if you don't.

Of course, no biggie if you want to keep it your little secret... :)

Cheers.
