visit of the deer

Okay, so there's one gift I can be thankful for on this gray day. As I was sitting in the bedroom playing mandolin, or flute, or maybe guitar, I can't remember which, we were visited by several white tailed deer. Calvin saw them first, and we watched as they cautiously approached the house. They were three fawns, all young from this year, and they stayed for a long time just watching and listening. Maybe it was the music that drew them in here in the first place. Calvin asked why we didn't get out the deer rifle and blow them away; I responded as diplomatically and philosophically as I could, that I enjoyed seeing the deer and maybe I would want to eat one someday but for now I just enjoyed watching them.

I also like how you responded to Calvin. There is a time for hunting and a time for just watching the natural world in all of its beauty. Maybe a camera instead of a gun-- it's the kind of shots I love!

Deb,
A great Experience. I had a similar one in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I was siting at the edge of a steep slope in the moments after dusk. Dark yet not pitch. I was doing meditation for about half an hour when a small group of deer ran up the slope. It was so steep that the could not see me or I them until they almost ran over me. Suddenly surrounded by seven frantic deer, bolting in all directions.

Another moment was even closer. In a different year, only about 30 yards from that spot, I was sitting outside my cabin at dawn. My daughter ellen was in the cabin. A small group of deer with two fawns walked up while I was meditating. About 50 feet away. I leaned back in my chair and tapped the window quietly and my daughter came to the window. We watched them together for about 10 minutes when they noticed me and spooked. A wonderful moment for the both of us.

dave, and Tami and RD- thanks for sharing your thoughts. As I was watching the deer I kept thinking "what's so special about this? I see deer all the time when I'm driving!" Ah yes, but do they ever choose to come here? We don't feed them, and there are a lot of good reasons not to, but I somehow felt compelled to put out some of the chickens' rolled corn for them. They were a beautiful sight.
