Welcome to the Coldest Spot in Minnesota, again

This is not sun scald, or some strange fungal thing. This is frost damage, here on a winter squash. In the middle of July. The plant will survive, but excuse me? Are we entering a mini Ice Age here? Can I not expect to grow frost sensitive vegetables and not have to worry about covering them up every night in the summer?

On the other hand, the sugar snap peas, which I planted pretty late, are thriving. As are the kale and Swiss chard. The tomatoes and other frost wimpy plants survived too.

  2. Unbelievable Deb!

(But then I was up in the UP of Michigan last week where it was 40 degrees on the first of July!)

  4. Yikes. Up near Dooloot it's a balmy 59 right now, but it was for sure cooler than average last night. On the plus side, it's great weather for dressing a couple of turkeys.

  5. Hi Deb,

I was wearing my parka when I went out to feed the chickens this morning. Unbelievable cold for this time of year, and for so long!

    Sorry about the squash.

  7. Lynne- bring warm clothes!

LauraH- Sounds like it's been a cool summer all over.

Jayne- Frost is a possibility every month of the year here. I still don't believe it myself.

FC- Who said life was fair? But this is getting pretty annoying...

Northwoods Baby- Are you by da lake or up over da hill? :) Those turkeys won't spoil in this weather.

Madcap- So it's not just here. Which confirms my theory that we are entering a mini ice age. Oh dear.

Dharma Bum- I guess Hibbing and Embarrass get roughly the same low temps I do, but I'm so much further south!

Sounds like we're in for a few more chilly overnights before the weekend too!

  9. Youch, frost in July - that's amazing. I love your new header photo with the great blue heron, by the way.

  10. RuthieJ- but the weekend is shaping up to be pretty nice. Going to put the hoop houses over the tomatoes though!

Penelope- now I know the meaning of the work "microclimate". And thanks, that is one of my favorite photos, perhaps that I have ever taken.
